Career Skills Program with Ryan Skinner

Ryan Skinner is an active-duty Army serviceman who recently decided to transition out of the military. He joins The Scuttlebutt this week to talk about his service and his experience with the Army Emergency Relief’s Career Skills Program. Created in 2015, the Career Skills Program allows retiring and separating Soldiers to participate in skills training during their transitional period to improve their civilian employment options. The program’s focus is on pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeships, on-the-job training, internships, job shadowing and other types of employment skills training during Soldiers’ last 180 days of service.

Dan Clor doesn’t have your average Marine Corps story. His first stint in the Corps didn’t go as planned but what it did was light a fire in him to make things right. And that’s before he started the American Warrior Festival whose mission is to provide travel and entertainment for the brave men and women who have served and are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces, and to give them access to Veteran support resources through their non-profit partners.

We’ve all heard of USO shows, but there’s another far-more intrepid group of entertainers that produces over 1,200 shows around the world each year, reaching over 500,000 personnel at 355 military installations. It’s called Armed Forces Entertainment, and it’s the Department of Defense’s agency for reaching US servicemembers at the most remote, isolated, and dangerous locations, from ships at sea to landlocked battlezones.

Peggy Simpson is not a veteran. She doesn’t come from a military family. She admits that she’s not even an author. However, Peggy befriended James, a former Corporal in the Ulster Defense Regiment in Ireland. James is a veteran of the Troubles, a Northern Ireland conflict between Protestants and Catholics that occurred between 1968 and 1998. Through Peggy, James wishes to get his story of recovery out. From an early age he experienced a series of traumatic events which has led to him developing Complex PTSD. But James hasn’t let that destroy his life. Lt. Col. (Ret.) Scott Mann is a former U.S. Army Green Beret with tours all over the world including Colombia, Iraq, and multiple tours in Afghanistan. He is a warrior storyteller and the founder of Rooftop Leadership.
