Welcome to The Scuttlebutt, a weekly pre-recorded program presented by The Veterans Breakfast Club. “Scuttlebutt” is a military term (specifically Navy) for talk or gossip around the watercooler below decks. And this is what our program is all about: we have informed conversations about the military experience, past and present. We want to bridge the divide between those who serve and those who don’t. We look at headlines, we tackle important topics, and we ask questions. Join us on this journey of spreading the Scuttlebutt!

Former Navy Intelligence Officer, MP Woodward, talks about his Espionage Drama Series The Handler and Dead Drop
MP Woodward is a former Naval Intelligence Officer and now a critically acclaimed author of The Handler Series. His new book DEAD DROP, released last week and continues the story of CIA case officers John and Meredith Dale. A divorced couple forced to work together in the world of espionage.
When nuclear negotiations between the U.S. and Iran have reached a crisis point, the American Administration is determined to move ahead, but there are several stumbling blocks, not the least of which is the Iranian intelligence operative the CIA has hidden away in one of its safe houses. John and Meredith find themselves caught in the middle between Mossad, the CIA, and an Iranian hit squad!
In a genre known for strong leads, high stakes, political drama, and tense interpersonal relationships – how does MP stand out from the crowd? What real world event sparked The Handler series? And how does he mine his near-decade long service in the Navy for characters, plot, and true-to-life war games?
Find out this and more by joining Shaun (a professed geek of the thriller genre) as we dig into what makes John and Meredith tick and what techniques MP uses to overcome writers block.

Military Spouses use Theater to Share their Stories of Life in the Military

Military Spouses Use Theater to tell Their Story
When servicemen and women join the military, it creates a ripple effect. One that includes everyone in their family and it can be argued that that ripple effect is felt most acutely by their spouse and children.
Joining The Scuttlebutt this week to share their stories are Amy Uptgraft and Lea Johnson.
In July 2015, as Amy learned to cope with her husband’s deployments, loneliness at home, and distance from loved ones she established connections with other military spouses who shared similar experiences. This led Amy to write the play I WILL WAIT after interviewing countless spouses about the challenges of life in the military. The play impacted the military and civilian community and began a conversation about military spouses’ lives, their individual stories and journeys, and the support that was needed.
In 2017, Amy connected with two other military spouses in Alaska; Lea Johnson and Wendy Caldwell. Together, they took Amy’s inspiration and desire to serve military spouses to the next level. A year later, in March 2018, Veteran’s Spouse Project was formed.
Now, Veteran’s Spouse Project is dedicated to sharing the stories of generations of military spouses, uniting the military and civilian communities in friendship and understanding, and creating a beautiful space rooted in the values we hold dear.
Join The Scuttlebutt this week to hear about Amy and Lea’s passion for storytelling, the sacrifices they’ve had to make and their personal stories of triumph and strength.

S7 Ep23: Veteran Business Owner Jeremy Mock of Glass City Cafe

Monday Apr 24, 2023
Veteran Business Owner Jeremy Mock of Glass City Cafe
Jeremy Mock is a Marine Corps veteran and current Navy Reservist with a passion for business. After his time in the Marine Corps, Jeremy visited his hometown of Jeanette, PA and was struck by how the downtown area had deteriorated. He decided to help revitalize the town and decided to open Glass City Café.
Jeremy isn’t alone in his personal mission, according to a Census Bureau report in 2021, Veteran-owned businesses made up about 5.9% (337,934) of all businesses, with an estimated $947.7 billion in receipts, approximately 3.9 million employees, and about $177.7 billion in annual payroll.
What’s more valuable than the numbers are veterans are contributing to bridging the military/civilian divide by being present in their communities as well as supporting other veteran-owned businesses to help each other thrive.
Glass City Café prides itself on partnering with Veteran owned businesses to provide premier roasted coffee and tea. They work with local dairies and bakeries to source the freshest and tastiest additions to the coffee they serve and in doing so are helping to revitalize a small town.
Join The Scuttlebutt this week to hear about Jeremy’s success story and how he took the many lessons he learned from the military and uses them to overcome the challenges of owning a business.

S7 Ep. 22: Veterans Journey Home Director/Filmmaker Frederick Marx
Monday Mar 27, 2023
Monday Mar 27, 2023
Filmmaker Frederick Marx – Veterans Journey Home
Frederick Marx is an internationally acclaimed, Oscar and Emmy nominated director/writer with 45 years in the film business. He was named a Chicago Tribune Artist of the Year, a Guggenheim Fellow, and a recipient of a Robert F. Kennedy Special Achievement Award.
Frederick is the founder of Warrior Films, a non-profit production company whose mission is to inspire needed social change by telling compelling stories highlighting transformational solutions.
To support this mission, Warrior Films recently put the finishing touches on Veterans Journey Home. This five-film series tells a different kind of “Hero’s Journey” than the one the public is used to. Not the tales of heroism and valor on the battlefield but the story of Veterans willing to fight the battle of the demons within – to find emotional and psychological peace with the ghosts of past decisions and actions. This hero’s journey requires a different kind of bravery, not facing bullets and IEDs, but facing tears of anguish and loss, facing acceptance of extreme fear, facing rage at betrayal, facing paralyzing self-doubt and shame, facing judgments of self-hatred.
The Veterans in the films, different across race, class, and culture – men and women, African Americans and Latinos, gay and straight…flesh out the different storylines. Their differing backgrounds and experiences express the full range of combat soldiery. Challenged by unemployment, rape, child abuse, homelessness, suicidal ideation, drug and alcohol addiction and more, what we witness through them is an emotional hurricane. Though at times terrifying, shocking, and emotionally wrenching, their stories of transformation ultimately prove tremendously uplifting, filled with humor and spirit, buoyed all the more by the expansive hearts of the men and women who serve them.

S7 Ep. 21:Letters from Vietnam
Monday Mar 20, 2023
Monday Mar 20, 2023
Letters from Vietnam
To connect with family, friends, and loved ones back home today’s servicemen and women utilize email and live-video calls. That wasn’t always the case. In Vietnam, our brave men and women deployed overseas had to rely on written letters. These letters could contain good news, bad news, or no news at all. “Mail Call” was either a respite from the stressors of war or a depressing event. But what specifically did these letters contain? And how did our troops respond? What details did they omit to protect their loved ones? Did they fear a Dear John or Dear Jane letter?
Joining The Scuttlebutt this week to talk about the history of letter writing in the military including their personal letters home are Vietnam Veterans Donn Nemchick (Navy) and Jim Roberts (Army). Their wars couldn’t have been more different. Donn served on a ship while Jim served in the bush. How did they each receive their mail? And what did they write about when it came time to respond? Was Mail Call always a happy time? And what of our boys that fought in WWII? What was V-mail?
We also discuss the books, museums, and online exhibits that catalogue and preserve the stories of our servicemen and women for future generations.

S7 Ep. 20: Can Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation cure PTSD?
Monday Mar 13, 2023
Monday Mar 13, 2023
What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation?
According to a recent report by the National Center for PTSD (2023) at some point in their life, 7 out of every 100 Veterans (or 7%) will have PTSD. In the general population, 6 out of every 100 adults (or 6%) will have PTSD in their lifetime. PTSD is also more common among female Veterans (13 out of 100, or 13%) versus male Veterans (6 out of 100, or 6%).
With the advent of new technologies, veterans have a wealth of options as they seek treatment as opposed to years past. On The Scuttlebutt we’ve attempted to demystify PTSD and provide information on available treatments; including Stellate Ganglion Block, Psychedelics, Writing, and even Grappling Martial Arts.
This week we highlight a new non-invasive treatment called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation or TMS. Worn on the top of the head, TMS devices stimulate a user’s brain waves using powerful magnets as a way to ‘rewire’ their brain activity. Currently approved by the FDA for headaches and anxiety, veterans have seen overwhelmingly positive results when using TMS to treat PTSD. They have reported healthier sleep patterns, less headaches, relief from suicidal ideations, and more relaxed responses to outside stimulation.
Joining The Scuttlebutt to talk about TMS and their personal results from treatment are Post 9/11 Army veteran Dirk Harkins, (and the point-of-contact in Ohio for TMS – Contact info below), and Marine Corps veterans Terry Wildman (Vietnam era) and Brian Majewski (Granada, Iraq, Afghanistan). Also joining me is frequent Scuttlebutt co-host and mastermind behind this episode, WTRF News Anchor/Reporter, Kathryn Ghion.
If you are interested in receiving TMS treatments, you can contact Dirk Harkins through email at dirkharkins68@gmail.com or by phone at 740-491-7125.
