Welcome to The Scuttlebutt, a weekly pre-recorded program presented by The Veterans Breakfast Club. “Scuttlebutt” is a military term (specifically Navy) for talk or gossip around the watercooler below decks. And this is what our program is all about: we have informed conversations about the military experience, past and present. We want to bridge the divide between those who serve and those who don’t. Robin’s Home spearheads support for homeless female veterans and their children

Robin’s Home provides a full continuum of care for homeless, unstably housed and low-income female veterans and their children. Robin’s Home is located in Butler, PA but serves women veterans in seven counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Butler, Clarion, Erie, Lawrence, and Mercer counties.

Robin’s Home is named after a women veteran who served in the Army and was deployed in support of Desert Storm. After discharge, Robin had been receiving treatment for sexual trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder when she also required surgery for a medical condition. Unfortunately, due to complications from the surgery, Robin passed away January 27, 2017. In her honor, Robin’s Home provides supportive housing to women veterans and their children in need.

No other agency provides supportive housing to homeless women veterans and their children. Sadly, there is a growing need for women veterans who need housing stabilization and supportive services. Women Veterans are the fastest growing segment of the military and homeless population. Women Veterans are also twice as likely to experience homelessness than non women veterans.

American Homecoming is a home remodeling show all about helping Veterans

Joining The Scuttlebutt this week is actor and host of American Homecoming Jack Maxwell. Jack has appeared on television in

Lost, 24, House, Without a Trace, Beverly Hills 90210, General Hospital, and All My Children. He hosted all four seasons of Travel Channel’s Booze Traveler and has now turned his attention to helping spread the word about disabled veterans.

It is an unfortunate fact that many of our veterans return from serving our country disabled, to a house that no longer serves them. What was once an easy walk up a couple of steps to the front door now requires a ramp. Hardwood floors are not a luxury but a necessity.

Navigating the house now becomes a difficult, time-consuming, often-aggravating chore.

In American Homecoming, a veteran and their family, will be sent away for one week on a surprise vacation. Meanwhile, the expert team of carpenters and designers, along with an army of volunteers, mobilizes with military precision to renovate and remodel the house.

Each episode concludes with the unsuspecting family returning to a yard filled with an army of volunteers waiting to introduce them to their new home. One that is more welcoming, livable, and easier to navigate, with greater accessibility. As an added bonus, the house is updated with new furniture, appliances, decor, and household goods.

Veteran, Annie Brock, created the Leader Transition Institute to aid service members as they transition out of the military

The Leader Transition Institute prepares and walks beside people who are making pivots in their lives, with a special emphasis on service members, veterans, and their spouses who are transitioning from active military service to the civilian sector.

LTI was launched in 2018 after the first session of what has become its flagship program, Changing Focus: Moving From We to Me. The program, designed for service members, veterans, and their spouses who are within 24 months of transitioning from active duty to the civilian sector, fills the gaps left by the DoD-mandated transition programs. Focusing on a holistic approach to establishing goals and renewing passions, Changing Focus helps service members take the next step in their careers.

Since 2018, LTE has crisscrossed the United States bringing the program to North Carolina, Florida, the District of Columbia and California. In 2020, the team moved into the virtual arena because of COVID-19. More than 300 Service members, veterans, and their spouses in over 33 states, in six countries, across three continents have now participated in 34 cohorts of the program.

Joining Shaun to talk about their individual service, the inception of LTI, and the programs on offer are President and CEO Annie Brock and Director Jose Velazquez.

Milo Speranzo didn’t like coffee before enlisting in the Air Force. But during his time deployed in Columbia and the military’s penchant for long hours, Milo developed a taste for a good cup-a-joe. Add to that a passion for entrepreneurialism and a love of his hometown of Pitcairn, PA and you have a recipe for success!

Joining Milo to talk about veteran-owned businesses is Navy veteran Donn Nemchick. Donn worked with the Small Business Administration for 16 years. During that time, he worked in conjunction with the Small Business Development Center at the University of Pitt. Army Veteran and Licensed Behavioral Health Provider Tara Fields talks about Mental Health in the Military

Tara Fields is a licensed behavioral health provider, Army combat veteran, and passionate advocate for the improvement of mental health care for all service members. Tara is part investigator, author, clinician, politician, and is on a mission to change the damning course our military continues down which is proving deadly. What she shares in Tracer Patient is a sobering account of her own personal journey and captures just how deeply flawed the current system is.

Through Tara’s story and other service members and their families’ stories, we learn that everyone must balance the demands of the system with the art of caring for oneself. During her service, Tara would learn that she was disregarding the fact that her own mental health was being overwhelmed and overstimulated. She nearly became a casualty herself. She would transition from the role of the mental health provider to the patient in a way she never saw coming. As a trained psychotherapist and seasoned Army Officer, she was motivated more than ever to expose the harsh realities plaguing our military today with respect to failed policies, toxic command climates, and a grossly negligent and failing military mental health system.

Tara speaks hard truths to power and refuses to quit until suicide rates decrease and until we fix an epically broken mental health system. She addresses the problem and provides impactful solutions.

An Honest Conversation about the Military Civilian Divide

I’ve heard it stated equally from both veterans and non-veterans that it is their own responsibility to help bridge the military/civilian divide. Civilians need to do more to understand what veterans have been through and take a more active role in learning about the wars we are fighting. While veterans need to be more open to sharing their experiences while contributing to their communities. I’ve learned over the course of The Scuttlebutt that the truth lies somewhere in the middle and have found that we are more alike than different.

Where do we start?

I believe it begins with curiosity, the willingness to ask questions, and listening. Lots of listening.

Sitting down with me this week to ask some hard questions is Post 9/11 Vet and Marine Corps Infantryman Stew Blackwell. Stew is a podcast host, author, and passionately believes that diving deeper will ultimately bring us closer together. With his brutal honesty and fresh perspective, he hosts the Warrior Legacy Podcast.

Our conversation covers Stew’s service, his thoughts about the civ/mil divide and ultimately Stew gets to ask me some questions about my civilian perspective of his generation and the War on Terror. It’s an honest conversation that not to be missed.

OBTT – Off-Base Transition Training offers free workshops for Vets, Guard, Reservists, and Spouses to find employment

The Off-Base Transition Training (OBTT) pilot program is an opportunity earned through service for veterans, veterans currently serving in the National Guard and Reserve, and their spouses to take control of their career through workshops to help meet their employment goals.

The ten, two-hour workshops are in-person, virtual and built to fit your schedule. These workshops are offered to you at no cost based on your service. You can mix and match workshops to meet your employment goals and attend workshops at your own pace.

The Workshops cover everything from developing your resume to nurturing interview skills and negotiating a salary. There is something for everyone!
